Flip the Script

It’s common for parents to lash out when they are feeling the stresses and pressures of raising children. Yet the words we use can have a real impact.

A study from the University of Pittsburgh (September 2013) shows that yelling at youth — particularly when it involves cursing or insults — can be just as harmful as hitting. Researchers found that harsh verbal discipline can cause teens to misbehave at school, lie to parents, and become aggressive, antisocial or depressed.

Yet, we also know that parents struggle with finding effective ways to discipline their children. According to a 2016 national parent survey from Zero to Three, 69% of parents say that if they knew more positive parenting strategies, they would use them.

Through sharing basic education and raising public awareness, we are helping Maryland parents to #FlipTheScript, giving simple strategies to help them focus their energy on positive behavior and communication.
